Fashionistas in Tel Aviv
This past weekend the Tel Aviv Fairgrounds hosted the bi-annual Fashion Market, giving young Israeli designers the opportunity to show off their latest designs. Over 40,000 people attended last year’s event and even though it was about 84 degrees in Tel Aviv on Friday, the exhibition center was packed with hip Israelis looking to upgrade their wardrobes. The Fashion Market has been happening for about eight years, but this year’s was by far the biggest. Over 100 designers, some well known and others not known at all were selling street wear, club wear, shoes and bags. It was definately the type of event to see and be seen at. I noticed several television personalities including Eitan, the recent winner of Israel’s “Apprentice” type reality show, “The Ambassador,” as well as a few folks from “Project Y,” Israel’s version of “Big Brother.” And there were plenty of beautiful Israeli models to please the eye.
I’m no Anna Wintour or Steven Cojocaru but from what I saw Israeli fashion is colorful, playful, experimental and edgy. Designers aren’t afraid to stray from traditional shapes and trends. I saw a lot of platform shoes, bright colors, geometric shapes, funky jewelry and hand sewn embroidery. Each seemed different from western styles whether in bedouin style pants, stenciled patterns and ethnic patchwork.
For anyone not wanting to look like you shopped at your local mall, consider checking out several Israeli designers such as Ella Gonen, Yosef, Anny & Adi Jacobson and others. Many of which can be found at in New York City on 131 Thompson St. at Rosebud, a fashion boutique exclusively of Israel designers.
