Israel 2: Faroe Islands 1; France 1: Switzerland 1
Up until last night, the sports columnists were still pretending that Israel had a realistic chance of getting to the 2006 World Cup. But that was before the national team’s fairly pathetic showing last night against the Faroe Islands in the World Cup qualifiers. And, worse, the tie game between Switzerland and France which really sealed our fates.
Despite Israel’s sad 2-1 victory over the Foroyars (we should have beaten them a lot more soundly), we still had a slight chance of getting to the World Cup had France beaten Switzerland. But the two tied and the gig was up.
It’s kind of sad. A few months ago we were still reveling in our chances to get to the World Cup for the first time in 35 years. Now all we can revel in is the fact that the national team managed to get through the 10 qualifier matches without losing. Unfortunately, in order to get ahead, not losing just isn’t good enough.
