Celebret-Ease
One thing I’ve always admired about the HLC (Holy Land Central) mindset is the “common man” thing. No matter how big of a player you THINK you’ve become, someone is always there to knock the sail-wind right out: “You ain’t all that; Now go sit yo’self down ‘coz you just like the rest of us”.
Celebs here don’t have beefy, overfed bodyguards following close to their toochases and they mingle about just like the common folk.
Why just yesterday, while cycling down a side street in Tel Aviv who walks by but Shulamit Aloni, former parliamentarian and government minister. No hulking men in black speaking in hushed tones over walky-talky airwaves. Just Shula click-clacking merrily along.
And this morning, when Raph (small child) and I went to our cafe to kill time while the laundry ran its rinse cycle, who’s sitting at the entrance but Shlomo Artzi, one of the country’s leading singers and a household name since ten years before god was born.
And THEN, who walks out from the cafe inner sanctum but Natan Zahavi, a national radio personality/film and television actor/generally loud and abrasive celebrity who I personally find highly distasteful.
And THEN THEN the same evening at a dance performance, my accompanying pal points out among audience members a t.v. celeb moderator of Israel’s version of American Idol. I wouldn’t know. No tube.
However, nobody but nobody in the audience or at the cafe was nudniking for autographs, staring or making a fuss. I think it’s because everyone here thinks of him/herself as so darned significant that …well like I wrote in the 1st paragraph: Go sit yo’self down.
