This Could Never Happen on ‘American Idol’
It’s the early stage of the weeding-out process on “Cochav Nolad” — that’s “A Star is Born,” the Israeli rip-off, oops, I mean the Israel VERSION of “American Idol.”
They divided the 100 contestants into couples to sing duets. Because it’s such a small country, many of them met and rehearsed together at each other’s homes.
One couple comes up to audition and were asked how it went, and the girl said, “Should we tell them what happened?”
What happened was that the boy from Kiryat Malachi went to rehearse with the girl from Sderot. In the middle of rehearsal, they heard the code words ring out, “Red Dawn, Red Dawn!” The boy didn’t have a clue what was going on. So the girl — the knowledgable Sderot local — pulled him in the right direction — to the bomb shelter.
Kassam rockets were falling — hurled by the neighbors in Gaza. Unfortunately, neither of them went through to the next round, and you couldn’t really blame their bad singing on the weaponry. But there is a happy ending — they didn’t look too upset when they were sent home. In fact, they looked happy and very into each other, like they might have had a moment down there in the bomb shelter.
