Arriving at Ben-Gurion Airport last night to send off my 17-year-old daughter on a three-month adventure in the United States, we found ourselves in the check-in line behind Ziggy Marley’s band.
You couldn’t miss them, actually – cases and cases of equipment, dreadlocks, and the coolest tour jackets I’ve ever seen, the 15-plus entourage was chilling and acting bemused as the El Al staff tried to figure out how to process all of them.

The had performed on Thursday night at the Ra’anana Amphitheater, braving the trend for international artists to cancel shows here in light of the war up north.
We struck up a conversation with a band member who said, “The show in Israel was great, and we even got to see some sites yesterday. what a beautiful country.”
”You can’t be scared to come places – we just want to play music,” he added.
Spying the guitar on my daughter’s back, he started asking about her music, and by the end of the line, he had made her promise to come sit with the band on the flight to New York, and reassured me he would have the female back up singers be in charge of her arriving to her destination safely.
So I won’t be surprised if the upcoming US leg of the Ziggy Marley tour soon features a female Israeli backup singer. I just don’t know how good she’ll look in dreadlocks.

  2. David, I understand that you’re very proud of your daughter and of course this is a cute little story. But while she might have the time of her life now, the life of 23 lebanese children has just ended. Imho the timing of your posting here is a bit awkward.

  4. Gray, I think the post is well timed. We are all saddened by loss of life in Lebanon and Israel but life has to continue even in time of war. It is helpful to everyone’s mental healt to have a diversion from the intensity of the war. I appreciate the post.

  6. 1. I wrote this before knowing anything about the bombing of the building.
    2. I am crying for the innocent Lebanese children who were killed.
    3. Hizbullah used that building – hiding amid children – to launch 100 Katyushas agains Israel.

  8. “I wrote this before knowing anything about the bombing of the building.”

Ok, sry, I was under the impression that all of Israel is following the news every single hour of the day. So, just an unfortunate overlap of events…

“Hizbullah used that building – hiding amid children – to launch 100 Katyushas agains Israel.”

Says who? The IDF? After their numerous cases of obviously lying in the last days, I don’t believe anything they say anymore. If they would really have proof of launchers near civilians, they would have released drone pictures or other evidence to improve their public image. They got to have those pictures, but I guess they show lots of civilians that would be harmed by their not-so-pinpointed attacks. Or did I miss this evidence somehow?

  10. “From the village and its surroundings, hundreds of Katyusha (rockets) have been fired at Israel, toward Kiryat Shemona and Afula,” Olmert said during Israel’s weekly Cabinet meeting, according to a participant in the meeting. “The army did not get an order to strike at Lebanese civilians. In Kfar Qana, hundreds of Katyushas are hidden.”

So, Olmert says, from that AREA, Katyushas have been fired. And he BELIEVES, that hundreds more are still hidden. He doesn’t say the IDF has any idea where exactly those stores are. He doesn’t say, too, if Israeli reccon did or did not show civilians, especially children, still in that town. Yet he wants to make us believe that there was sufficient reason to indiscriminately bomb buildings there, disregarding the danger for innocent lives, just for the vague chance of hitting some terrorists or missiles. What kind of mindset shows in those ‘decisions’ by Israeli political and military leadership?

  12. “After their numerous cases of obviously lying in the last days, I don’t believe anything they say anymore.” Me, Gray

“From the village and its surroundings, hundreds of Katyusha (rockets) have been fired at Israel, toward Kiryat Shemona and Afula,” Olmert, in Israel Insider

“A senior IAF officer emphasized that that dozens of Katyusha rockets were launched from the village and its surrounding areas.” Israel Insider

See what I mean? Dozens or hundreds? At least they should coordinate their lies. But I guess they simply don’t care.

  14. Given that Hezbollah deliberately used the civilans in Qana as human shields, while they fired rockets from the same area, it is Hezbollah and not Israel who are responsible for their deaths.

Thanks for a great post, David. As to how your daugther will look in dreadlocks, well that is one of the questions that we will be looking forward to finding out!

  16. As a Palestinian American girl, i love the Jews really i do, what, am i supposed to hate my cousins? No. but i really hate what theyre doing, this occupation, this murder and killing! If i could ever sit and talk with an Israeli soldier honestly, i’d open my heart out to him and hope he does the same. God bless the Palestinian people who suffer at the hands of the Israeli government, and God bless the Israeli victims of this war. May it end soon.
