Baseball Caps In London

So I’m packing my son’s things for a week of sightseeing with his father and cousins in London (it’s a Bar Mitzvah trip for the two nephews)
And I know it’s hot, so I pack the sunscreen and start looking for a baseball cap to put in the suitcase. And one by one, I realize that all of his hats have Hebrew writing on them, and so I think, “OK, I’ll ask my husband to pick up a new hat for him once I get there.”
And I just stepped back from that thought and realized how automatic it was to me for not to feel safe to have him walking around a city as civilized as London wearing something with Hebrew on it, because of how many people there must hate us right now. And how terribly sad that was.
According to the plan, the boys’ other uncle, my brother-in-law, is supposed to come along and share the tour guide duties in London. They leave on Sunday, and my brother-in-law, as I’ve mentioned before, is up in the north in the country, after being called up for reserve duty with so many others.
He’s talked to his officer about it, and it’s unclear whether or not he’ll be able to get discharged in time for the trip (he’s got back-up type duties, he’s not a fighter, did that in his youth)
If he doesn’t, then my husband will just have to fly solo in London. That will be the sacrifice he has to make for his country. It’s obviously impossible for him to complain about it in the current situation. I’ve been joking that dealing with three young boys 24/7 for a week is a different kind of combat duty.

I remember after a London pro-Israel rally in Trafalgar Aquare a few years ago seeing people wondering around central London afterwards wearing Hebrew flags and wearing Hebrew tshirts. The site was striking for its unusualness. It is sad that whilst it is considered trendy to wear a Brazilian flag and sometimes even a Union Jack, things with Hebrew on them or the Israeli flag are seen first and always in political terms.
