A name on a list

“Jameel,” who has been providing round-the-clock war blogging at “The Muqata,” is reportedly doing army reserve duty right now “up north.” One of his guest bloggers has taken the helm, but took a moment from the frenetic news postings to share a sobering personal moment:

While every death is difficult and of our soldiers more so, occasionally we find ourselves (or at least I find myself) reading over the lists of those killed in action or as a result of terrorism and breathing a sigh of relief when none of the names ring a bell. Occasionally though…one of those names does ring a bell. It happened once last week when Michael Levin was killed, I had met him in passing. We were both members of the same youth group, we ran across each other at the yearly reunion, so his death struck a bit more.

And then today, one of the soldiers killed in yesterday’s fighting in Bint Jabaeil was the son of a person whom I work with. This is someone I see every day, run into in the halls, speak to at lunch. For a while we worked in the same department.

Jameel and I are occasionally flippant in our ongoing reporting of the situation here, it’s moments like these that bring it back, that this isn’t a joke, it’s deadly serious.

May his memory, and those of all the soldiers who have lost their lives in the fight to save Israel from the hands of those who wish to see it destroyed, be as a blessing to us all and may their spirtual achievements be a shield for us.

  2. that’s the due of the war….I’ve always felt sympathy toward the Israelis in their struggle with the Palestinians, but the case is a bit different here….you’re mourning for your friend who’s a soldier in the army, but how about the Lebanese civilians then?! I don’t support the terrorists of Hizbollah, but at the same time, the civilians in southern Lebanon are innocent as well.
    sympathy for all violence victims…..

  4. Hi Israelity –

Just a clarification – I’m not on reserve duty up north now (well, not this week) — just taking a day or two vacation with some visiting relatives.

The sobering moment was simply awful today when Litvishe and I heard the news. Simply…sobering.

May we hear good news soon.
