School Has Started, Halleluyah!
Summer is like a parental triathalon. The first two-thirds are be the perky bicycle riding with the wind in your hair, and swimming part with the water to cool you down and buoy you up. Then comes the end, where you are running, or walking or just stumbling, sweating, exhausted, wondering whether you’ll make it to the end alive.
And this summer in Israel had the added mental exhaustion and stress of war. Many people didn’t go on vacation as planned, either because family members were called up for duty, or because the vacation they had planned was up north. Even if you weren’t working, even if your body was physically relaxing at the beach or the pool, your mind wasn’t relaxed.
It was too hot to do much else besides the beach or the pool, and even then, we rarely went out in the heat before 4 PM, except to the mall. I’ll be happy if I don’t step into another mall till next summer. Or see another Disney or Dreamworks animated film with a deep moral message for the kids, and wink-wink inside jokes for the grownups.
