Floating on the Dead Sea

Our friend from the Philipines, Ernest, can always be counted on for some great travelogues and fabulous photos accompanying them. Here’s his report from a trip to the Dead Sea with a few busloads of his countrymen:
We arrived at the Dead Sea before lunch. While others immediately rushed to have some swim (or floating?) at the sea, I joined the rest who stayed to prepare the food. And lots of food indeed, mostly grilled fish and chicken.
After lunch, I proceeded to have some swim. I thought that the water is somewhat oily, something that I did not notice the first time I swam there. Or is it because I applied some sunscreen lotion for protection?
A friend noted that the land on the other side of the sea is Jordan, and I immediately realized its proximity to Israel. I then actually pondered at the thought of trying to go to Jordan by swimming across the Dead Sea. Which is a total impossibility for I would not dare try to venture and float farther than just a few meters from the sea bank.

Yes, Ernest, the Dead Sea is oily, due to its chemical makeup — that’s why the ladies on Park Avenue pay the big bucks to get their bodies scrubbed with Dead Sea salt at their local spa — to make them smooth and lovely!

This entire blogsite is certainly interesting, especially to a Jewish American who has never been to Israel. You may count on my presence at some point in the next few years. Really. I have promised my soon-to-be new wife (4 days to go!) that we will go, so I can’t back out. Swimming in the Dead Sea! Certainly sounds romantic to a guy from the US Midwest, I expect my new wife will think so, too.
Thanks for this site.
