Shakshuka

Shakshuka is an acquired taste. The first challenge to enjoying it is getting over the way it looks. When I first came to Israel, about a million years ago, I would see the concoction displayed in restaurants and thought it was the most disgusting looking dish I had seen in my life. Eggs in tomato sauce? Ugh!

But it became impossible to avoid, and finally, when I was in a Libyan restaurant where it was being cooked up fresh, I gave it a try. Fantastic. I was hooked.

According to the best information I could find, shakshuka originated in Tripoli, and was brought to Israel by Libyan Jews. Greeks and Moroccans. But Israelis of all backgrounds enjoy it, and it is a staple of army fare.

I’ve devoted space on my blog to shakshuka appreciation and links to recipes.

Now Ouriel offers up his version of shakshuka for our inspection, complete with the recipe.

Looks pretty good to me.

  2. Please. Is this some kind of a joke? Sausages? Cherry tomatoes? Merguez??? Onion???? Are you kidding me? There is only one REAL shakshuka recipe. Everything else is brutally inauthentic. Click here, follow the instructions and taste the love that Brakha’s sending:

  4. You were looking at it the wrong way – It’s tomato sauce in eggs, not the other way around… :P

Yeah, Shakshuka is great, just looking at the photo makes me wanna… (you gotta admit it looks good there, right?)
