There’s no escaping it.

A young woman in Tel Aviv suffers a problem familiar to all newly-married Jews everywhere . . . though the audacity of her mother-in-law is somewhat surprising even to me:

When they decided to create a Jewish state, did they take into account that this means a state full of Jewish mothers?

Idan and I are 27 and 25, respectively, and we’ve been together 8 years. Up until the moment, about 2 years ago, when we announced we were getting married, our least favorite (and most commonly heard) question was, “Well, when are you two getting married?” One of the wonderful things about getting married is you stop getting that question. Or so we thought…

Turns out that question doesn’t go away, it just morphs. In fact, overnight the new question of choice, sprinkled out liberally by parents, grandparents, aunts, and strangers on the bus, became “So, when are you two having babies?” Um, well, someday…

But whoever said that Jewish mothers have no tact was clearly just an antisemite. Jewish mothers can in fact be very subtle, when necessary. Idan’s mother hasn’t asked us about babies in at least two weeks. But just in case, well, if by any chance it happens to be needed sometime soon, she did get me some maternity pants for Rosh Hashana

  2. Speaking as the other half of said relationship, this is not the most audacious thing my mother has done by far. Tif’s mom already has grandchildren in the family so there’s a lot less pressure from that side, but my mom (and grandparents) are clamoring for some version 2.0′s.

  4. My question has been to israeli’s why are they keeping these types of attacks upon themselves. Why not use israeli mothers in a psych attack against its enemies.
Imagine what they would do for advertisements. “Are your children eating enough? Nu? You just have to … (not have your husband try to destroy israel)”

Sorry, I am not a jewish mother but I know that they can do a lot better than the current regieme.
