And speaking of Belgians . . .
From the AP via Ynet:
A military transport plane brought 139 Belgian troops to Beirut Wednesday to work with the UN force in war-ravaged southern Lebanon.
Belgium hopes to have some 420 troops in Lebanon by Oct. 6 to be part a UN peacekeeping force which is expected to comprise 15,000 troops. They will assist an equal number of Lebanese troops in keeping the peace along the Lebanese side of the border with Israel. (AP)
Yonatan’s response:
From now on I will sleep a lot better at night, knowing that from now on the Lebanese side of the Lebanese-Israeli border will be guarded even better than it was before.
I think he is being sarcastic.

be thankful for every single soldier
The problem Israel had was illustrated by Tzipi Livni some weeks back. Did Israel want to retain troops endlessly in Lebanon, with all the diplomatic and logistical problems and issues it would entail? No. We have been there before.
The issue is not about “guarding the border on the Lebanon side”, it is about having entities answerable to the UN who are responsible for ensuring 1701 is complied with. However inefficiently.
The border can only be protected by Israel from the Israeli side. And Israel has taught Hezballah a lesson it is never going to forget, regardless what they claim.
Somewhat OT:
Islam represents a Tribalist mentality, which is inherently anti-civilization.
Maybe the Belgians will get a lesson in what “authentic” people are really all about.

I can speak for myself: I am indeed thankful to each of the individual soldiers from around the world who have come to help ensure that Lebanon upholds its agreements vis-a-vis Israel.
However, the low number of troops sent, together with their extremely limited powers, ensures that their presence will be meaningless. I feel bad for them actually, as individuals, being sent halfway across the world just to be completely ineffectual (at best).
But I feel worse for Israelis, who will ultimately pay the price for Hezballah’s ambitions and the world’s half-hearted commitments to us.

We as Europeans have finaly realized that Israel and Hizbollah wont be able to hold the peace. Only a third party can make sure, both sides stay quiet. Hizbollah would have an idological problem if it attacks UN like they attacked the US-occupation years ago. So this time there is a real chance for a longer cease-fire.
I would be thankful for every single soldier if I was convinced – even for one moment only – that such a soldier and the organization that he represents would be as committed to protecting me and my family against Hizbullah attacks as he is to protecting Lebanese civilians, ignoring Hizbullah rearmament and providing the Iran/Syria-supported terrorists with cover against Israeli counterattacks. Unfortunately I am not convinced of that, on the contrary, this UN force – like UNIFIL – appears to serve our enemies’ interests and only will make it more difficult for Israel to defend its borders, citizens and soldiers against attacks by Hizbullah ( and maybe other ) terrorists, attacks that surely will come, believe me.
That I picked out the Belgian contingent of the UN force to laugh at probably is a result of me being Dutch.
Oh yes, I meant to be sarcastic.
Marius-
Perhaps only a third party can protect the cease-fire, but chances are slim to none that this particular third party is actually going to do that.
One can hope that I’m wrong. But I don’t think so.

The problem is that Israel did not attempt to vanquish Lebanon. Twice the United States have stepped in before and rescued and protected Arafat when he was alive. First in Lebanon a couple of decades ago and then while he holed up in the stinking cesspool named the Muquata.
This time Israel can only go so far because it relies on the United States – its only ally.
The United States has created a hell for itself in the mid-East and we ALL have a terrible problem now. The major problem is Iran and unless it is vanquished [level Tehran to the ground for example] we cannot win this fight of the civilized against the uncivilized].
