Repentance Pains? Call: ’1-800-CLE-TZEDEK’ (Video)
Rosh Hashana over and 10-Days-of-Repentance pains got you down, Bunky? Well, Stephen Colbert, of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report,” has the cure.
And he even gets the Hebrew right (not to mention the ringtone):
“Call: 1-800-CLE-TZEDEK. Operators are standing by.”
(But seriously, folks: Can you – for even a picosecond – imagine something like this aired for Ramadan in the West – let alone in the Muslim world?)

ON THE ISRAELI-EGYPTIAN BORDER — Sergeant Tzipora Schindler , a 2004 graduate of Newton South High School, is on the front lines of Israel’s other border war, on the lookout for terrorists and smugglers along the country’s southern frontier.
From her base camp atop Mount Uzia, she can see through binoculars where Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia intersect at the Gulf of Aqaba below, gleaming like an oasis in the desert landscape.
Schindler, 20, left her parents in Newton and moved to Israel two years ago, seeking spiritual rebirth after spending part of her childhood in Jerusalem. She quickly volunteered for the only infantry battalion in the Israel Defense Forces that includes women.

An oldie, but a goodie for Rosh Hashana.
And this from journalist Judy Lash Balint:
The New Year season in Israel is marked by a unique set of sights, sounds and smells.
Markets burst with color. The bright scarlet of bulging pomegranates, deep shiny purple eggplant, huge green grapes and succulent dark brown dates line the stalls.
The sharp sound of the shofar reverberates through the slightly damp air of the early morning, as the faithful heed its plaintive call to repentance during the days leading up to Yom Kippur. The scent of the last of the summer flowers lingers in the air, mixed with the fragrant odors of traditional holiday food wafting out of kitchens and bakeries all over the city.
It’s hard to comprehend that in the midst of such vibrancy, Israelis continue to face existential threats from neighboring enemies that claimed hundreds of lives over the past months.

Shana Tova — Happy Jewish New Year

It’s traditional to start the New Year with blessings. Here are some worthwhile wishes from East Med Sea Peace:
To my family – I wish you health and happiness and a fantastic year..
To my friends – I wish love and prosperity and comfort and laughter..
To my colleagues – I wish a successful year with good work life balance..
To my neighbours – I wish that you find somewhere wonderful to park your vehicles other than across my drive way..
To my city and beaches – I wish for a clean year.. may we enjoy the better air since our power plant switched from coal to natural gas and mirror the air with cleaner water and streets (our responsibility! have mercy on the surfers you psycho-litterers!)
To my district – I wish for responsible development.. fair treatment of the poorer classes and heritage preservation..
To my country – I wish peace and security with itself and its neighbours – those that share the land we love and those who live beyond green and blue lines..
To my world – i wish for a realignment of priorities.. our sustainability in this tight ecosphere requires it..
And for myself I wish that I forever appreciate that which I have..
Shana tova to everyone..
Passing the Test

How do you know if you are Israeli?
My friends son was driving last night. He did not have his drivers license with him, as he had forgotten it at home. He was stopped 4 times by police at random checkpoints. The police often set up random checkpoints where they will stop cars for spot checks, to make sure cars are not stolen, for example. Often these checks will take place in the middle of the night. This 19 year old kid was stopped 4 times last night at different checkpoints at around 3 in the morning!! With no license. He talked his way out of the ticket each time.
That is Israeli!
