The Man With the Orange Beard

Stephanie is sure she can’t be alone on this one:
Every friggin’ time I navigate to a web page with Mahmoud Abu Tir’s image on it, I get a jolt.
See what I mean? He’s a senior Hamas official meaning his face gets a decent amount of air time. Especially now that he’s serving time in an Israeli jail under conditions that some claim violate international law.
Personal note to Mahmoud: Do something with that orange, wouldja? You look like a cross between a wanna be Herschel Shmoikel Pinkus Yerucham Krustofsky aka Krusty the Klown and the jovial rabbi in my neighborhood who keeps inviting us to Saturday lunch. Are Those the images you, a Hamas front man, wish to project to the world? Call me. I’ll get you a stylist and image makeover person pronto.
your friend, Stef
A Call for Human Dignity
Yael shares the outrage of Israeli Arab protestors who lost friends and relatives in the Sinai last month.
Israeli-Arabs protested in front of the Egyptian embassy today, calling out for Egypt to “Learn from Israel what human dignity means. Human dignity is a primary value in Israel.”
They were protesting the bus accident in the Sinai that killed 12 Arab-Israeli tourists. Egypt refused to allow our (Israel’s) ambulances and medical personnel that were standing by just a few miles away to come to the scene to aid the victims and to evacuate them to Israeli hospitals despite the fact that they were not equipped to deal with the scope of the accident nor had a hospital in the vicinity to which critcally injured patients could be taken. At least one victim died simply because evacuating him from the scene to a place where he could receive medical care took them so long and the clinic injured patients were taken to did not have even the most basic equipment for emergency needs (e.g. blood supplies, operating room or equipment, beds –it was a walk-in clinic for everyday minor illnesses). Rather than in ambulances with medics, the victims were taken from the scene on the backs of vegetable trucks….
We had ambulances, hospitals and helicopters ready to spring into action. One of the things I didn’t post about because it became moot when Egypt wouldn’t allow us to get our injured citizens, is the blood drive that started immediately upon the news that the accident had happened. Israelis –Arabs, Jews, and Christians — flocked to donate blood that hospitals assumed would be needed for the victims. It of course went unused for them when we could not bring them home. Grrrrrrr.
To add insult to injury, the negligent bus driver whose reckless driving caused the accident has just been sentenced to a mere 12 months.
Arab-Israelis are mad and so are the rest of us Israelis!
Brand America

Israelis love America.
They love it so much that anything that seems new and different and innovative for any reason is called “American.”
OneJerusalem.com has made a list.
American Kitchen” – spacious, well-accessorized kitchen (built-in oven and dish-washer included!)
“American Chips” – French fries…
“American Bottle-Opener” – apparently one of the fancy accessories found in “American kitchens” – yet to be explored.
“American Tool-Shed” – a tool shed.
“American Sandwich” – though American cookbooks take pride in each US region’s specialty (varying from beef to crab), Israeli American sandwiches consist exclusively of rye bread, mayonnaise spread and pastrami.
“American Ice-Cream” – extremely soft and creamy ice-cream, mostly chocolate- and vanilla- flavored.
“American Test” – multiple-choice test.
Cheers! L’Haim! Let’s Drink!

If you are trying to figure out which wine to pick out for the upcoming Jewish High Holidays, or if you just want to taste some new and different vintage, Daniel Rogov has a list of recommendations of Israeli wines. There are getting to be so many that it helps to have a little guidance.
It’s About Time
It’s been many months since this was pointed out as a major problem. It sure has taken a long time to get a government bureaucracy to change one word.
Good news for Israelis headed to the United States: The new Israeli driver’s license issued Tuesday will be valid for private vehicles in all US states, and an international license will no longer be needed.
Gideon Siterman, director-general of the Ministry of Transport, explained Tuesday that the new license will be titled “Driving License” as oppose to “Driving Permit.” Israeli driving licenses have so far been issued under the title “Driving Permit,” and US authorities would not acknowledge the documentation because of it being a permit, not a license.
