Dancing Queens….!

You know, being such a small country, Israelis can’t afford not to be proud of any international accomplishment, no matter how marginal it might initially appear. So I’m glad I’ve been informed that we’ve got these two lovely guys, Dan and Gur making their mark in…..homosexual ballroom dancing competitions. My informant: the helpful “Nominally Challenged” at A Whiff of the Med.
It takes two to tango. And also to cha-cha, waltz and rhumba, as these guys prove. Be sure to check out their hippy hippy shakes on this page (which includes their underwear-clad interview and performance on the Naked News – not for the faint at heart, young children or the terminally homophobic).
I’m so proud of these guys. Firstly, they’re the first and so far only gay couple to represent Israel in dancesport (which is what the ballroom dancing event is known as at the Out Games); secondly, they were outstanding ambassadors of our country at a time when we really needed all the good press we could get, during the latest war; and thirdly (and perhaps most importantly, for them), they actually won the gold medal in their event! (apologies, that link is in Hebrew) Which, for a couple who had only been dancing for about 6 months, is no mean feat.

That’s interesting, because I used to dance in college, also under DanceSport (which is the international ballroom dance umbrella organization) and they didn’t allow same-sex couples in collegiate competitions..this is always a problem, as college teams always have more female dancers than male dancers.
Thanks for the great cover about us! Indeed, we danced when there was a war in Israel. And indeed, we didn’t know how the canadians will react to us. Oh, well, it’s a long story, which I hope to include soon in our site. We always put more stuff there (it never ends, more pics and videos are still to arrive) so keep checking it out!
And Lena – you are more than welcome to start dancing with a girl. We are now parcticing for the Eurogames. Shall we see you there???
