The Israeli Wedding Aesthetic

I recently published a story for the Catered Events supplement of the New York Jewish Week, about the different “look and feel” that Israelis strive for in their weddings, compared to Americans- and how the differences can pose conflicts for Americans who, for whatever reason, choose to hold their weddings in the Holy Land.
Call it “Manolo meets Morocco” or “I Do with the IDF.” As the number of American singles moving to Israel, and then marrying here, grows, and as more American Jewish couples choose to hold their weddings in Israel, Israeli wedding vendors and their imported U.S. clientele are increasingly encountering a conundrum never discussed in Brides magazine: what to do when your assumptions about how a wedding should look, feel, and proceed clashes with the Israeli version of a “perfect, special” day.
. . . The differences between the Israeli and American wedding aesthetic, event planners here say, start with the invitations and continue with the wedding dress, the flowers, the venue, even with whether there should be an aisle to walk down and seats for the guests at the chupah ceremony.
