Shiri Maimon is Ready for Her (International) Close-Up

November 27, 2006 - 7:47 PM by

She was tremendously successful at the Eurovision Song Contest, her career in Israel is going gangbusters, she’s got the blonde hair, tan and cleavage to compete with Britney — and some would argue has the vocal power to play in the leagues of Mariah and Whitney. So it was just a matter of time until Shiri Maimon took her shot at the international arena, and no surprise when today in Yediot Aharonot, it was revealed that she’s quietly recording an album in English in London.

Think she has a shot? Here’s a taste of Shiri performing live in English, doing Anastacia’s “One Day in Your Life.”

And if you’ve never seen it, here’s Shiri in full-on video vixen mode, singing “Ahava Katana.”

It will be interesting if she’s marketed as mainstream — which is absolutely her style — or whether, because Israel artists have only ever really succeeded internationally by playing up the ethnic, world music angle, if she’s all of a sudden going to try to go exotic.

  2. “She aint no Britanee”. And is definitely far away from challenging Madonna at the age of 49.

Sorry folks – the program “American Idol” have singers that are far prettier and can sing AND dance who simply do not make it in America.

Don’t know about Europe, but compared to what we see in the US, she is pretty ordinary.

  6. [...] Now the trend is coming full circle, with the 2008 MTV European Awards on November 6 offering a “Europe’s Favorite Act” category, its 23 nominees made up of regional winners. If nothing else, it’s a clever way to get esoteric markets to tune in to the mega-broadcast. Representing Israel at Liverpool’s Echo Arena will be Shiri Maimon, no stranger to international pop competition, currently starring in a recurring role on Bad Girls, a soap opera on the local MTV-competing Music 24 channel.
