Sex and Religion for the Kiddies

Oh, the things that pop up in our weird little internet world! The web site flix.co.il — a local YouTube equivalent — has discovered a new bizarre sex symbol in an unlikely place. In the world of nostalgic television clips, someone uncovered a short program called “Tofi and the Gorilla” aired on the government (the ONLY) television channel in 1981.

It’s become a huge hit on Flix, with viewers speculating how in the world a chick dressed (undressed) like that got on a children’s show, not to mention some of the weird themes. If you know Hebrew, you can witness the bizarro dialogue in the clip above, where the gorilla decides he’s Satan. “I’m not a Jew! I’m a murderer and I’m going to drink your blood!”

What were the producers smoking? Or maybe knowing that there was nothing else on television, they were purposely making it a little underhandedly sexy and twisted to entertain the adults who had nothing else to watch?

    2. Uh, Allison…this is not from 1981. It is most certainly satire. Although, someone was definately stoned when they came up with this.

    3. This looks to me more like a subversive parody, intended for adult audience but deliberately styled as a kids’ program. Possibly a parody on some existing kids’ program.

    I’ve tried asking around, but no one of my acquantances here, whether “native” or veteran immigrant, remembers this program.

    5. So what’s the deal? Assuming it’s a fake, someone invested a lot of time and energy — there’s a bunch of “clips” of “episodes” up. Guess I’ll have to troll the comments…

    6. It could have been a genuine TV program, just not a genuine KIDS TV program, but rather a satirical one. A Hartzufim predecessor, perhaps?

    8. One channel in 1981? I remember here in the US in the 60’s having 3 or 4, depending on the reception. I’m going to provide a link to those “right-wing zionists at Little Green Footballs.”

    9. You know it’s not a real TV show, right? (more here). Look at the fonts, the shape of the girl’s abs (they didn’t make them that way), the quality of the production. the use of words like “frigid” and the references to homosexuality…

    11. I know I’m late to the party but thought I’d clear this up. I’m in Israel for the second time this year at the moment. This show is real, and is recent. Last trip, our apartment had Hot, a local cable TV provider and I watched a few episodes of the show. Keep in mind I don’t know a lick of hebrew but that didn’t matter, it still cracked me up.

    These clips have a grain filter on them to make them look older, they are likely all from some parody episode I never saw over here. One episode had Tofi/Toffee pretending to be Saddam Hussein and Gorilla was George Bush. At the end of the episode they had murdered each other and there was copious ketchup/fake blood everywhere. There are supporting cast puppets including a robot and a Rice-a-Roni oven mitt thing that seems to compete with Gorilla for Toffees’ affection.

    Episodes with English subtitles would be a perfect addition to the Adult Swim lineup on Cartoon Network in the US. It’s a pseudo kids show for grown-ups who haven’t grown up. I love it and I love Toffee. If I could find DVDs of the show and could find subtitles in English it would be glorious.
