No Better Place to Raise Children (Especially as Smokers)
Israel: no better place to raise kids. Everybody here knows it. Far away from the crime-ridden streets of America lies a place with friendly neighbors, parks, and of course, no random gun violence.
And, ahhh, the beach. Fun for the whole family! Journey down to Eilat like I did yesterday, and you’ll find a land of sun, relaxation, and fun. Heck, I even found the old “insert a coin, maneuver the claw, and win a prize” game! WHAT KID DOESN’T LIKE THAT???
(pause)
I guess I’m just used to prizes like fuzzy dice and silly putty…

“Hey, Shmulik, how bout some Marlboro Lights with that choo-choo?”
G-d, I miss my childhood.

MTV Spring Break
NewsFlash!
Up next month: On March 24th (check for local listing time): MTV News airs “The Amazing Break,” a 30-minute special highlighting college students who spend their vacation time volunteering for local or international causes.

One of the four program segments will showcase Jewish National Fund’s Alternative Spring Break in Israel: A film crew shows groups pruning forests scarred by last year’s summer war, painting bomb shelters & meeting Northern Israel residents and foresters who lived the experience.
Andrew Millard, MTV News producer: “…we immediately felt that it would be something our audience would want to see. Not only is it newsworthy but we thought it that it offered an interesting perspective on a very complicated part of the world.”
Hassidic Hierarchy
For those who have never seen images from a Hassidic “royal” wedding, feast your eyes. This shot comes from Tuesday’s Alter family wedding in Jerusalem – “an estimated 50 thousand attended” (!) and streets were closed off – according to this article.

Not in the know? (Me too) The groom Aron is the grandson of prominent Ger Hassidic dynasty leader Rabbi Yaakov Aryeh Alter.
We can see here that choosing an outfit clearly isn’t an issue. But how does one go about catering for 50,000?
Purim Purim Purim
Filed under: History and Culture, Holidays, Israeliness

I haven’t blogged it but yes indeedy, we’re headed into the funnest, bestest holiday there is: Purim.
If you aren’t here in Israel at the moment, I’ll paint a wee picture:
- Costume and toy stores overflowing with Ninja, Snow White, Naruto, etc. costumes and all sorts of accessories from wigs to face/body/hair paint to masks to hats to gloves to noisemakers to plastic hammers to silly string to glitter to…
- Calendars marked with Purim parties, parades, weekend street fairs and school events
- Bakeries, supermarkets, cafes and corner stores serving up poppy seed, apricot, chocolate and prune filled hamentaschen
- Non-profits, friends and family preparing mishloach manot to give to others
- Buzz buzz buzz
- Milder weather, blooms budding, cats yawwing wildly in backyards as “Spring Love” onsets (see Yael’s move to curtail this problem)
Stay tuned for more detail in the coming days…
Paper or Plastic?
At first glance, this Globes story about Ikea Israel’s decision NOT to charge customers for plastic bags sounds great.

Wow, we’re finally getting a break! Let’s go to Ikea…
HOWEVER…When we put on our environmentally friendly thinking caps, we find that in good conscience, we won’t be able to give our friends over @ Ikea a smiley face sticker after all.
A few days ago IKEA Systems announced that it would charge $0.05 per plastic bag, and that the proceeds would go to an environmental organization. IKEA North America head Pernille Spiers-Lopez said, “We think the time has come to take this measure. This is a small step, but we believe that it’s good for us as a company because it will reduce our impact on the environment.”
I know that finances in Israel can get tight but..um..shouldn’t we get in on this action too?
Thanks Karin K over at CIWI for the tip-off..
