ACE is the place

ACE Hardware

After a hectic day of phone calls from students, editors, and other colleagues, Yael found some relaxation and relief at an unlikely place … ACE Hardware (yes, we have ACE in Israel, as well as Office Depot, McDonalds, Burger King, Dominos Pizza).

My real excitement today was visiting the ACE hardware store. This is definitely one of my favourite places in my neighborhood. I was seeking a coffee grinder and, of course, ACE had them in stock. I’m fond of ACE because it has almost everything. It is also very warm and toasty inside in the winter and very cold and frosty in the summer –all of the things my apartment is not. So trips there usually turn into, hmmm let’s just hang out here a little while longer, my what lovely dishes these are and oh look, I’m not sure what this thing is but it definitely looks interesting, hmmmm. The guys and gals who work there wandering the floors are also generally very nice and helpful. They are willing to climb up on things to get something down for you, offer advice, tell you confidentially that X product you are considering is not worth the material it was made out of –and even occasionally suggesting a different brand that isn’t carried there *shhhh.* The people who work at the check-out are generally not very helpful and, while you get a nice cheerful greeting from the security guard when you walk in and all the help you want as you wander around looking at all the things you don’t need but it is nice to know they are there in the event you ever do (while being all warm and toasty), your final moments in the store are usually not especially pleasant. And it is not only because you will inevitably find yourself spending more than you intended or even that you are spending exactly what you intended but ow, the pain, as you think of your bank account. No, it is because the check-out women are just downright rude.

Still, ACE is the place and it has a very catchy little song playing there all about Kadima Jack. So catchy that you find yourself humming it as you remain warm and toasty wandering the aisles. Then find yourself humming it on the way home.
