Israeli director Joseph Cedar took top honors at the Berlin Film Festival over the weekend, edging out top contendors like Robert DeNiro and Steven Sodebergh for the title of year’s best director. Cedar won for his film Beaufort that tells the story of a group of Israeli soldiers weeks before Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000.
“I wish for all of us that our leaders will be afraid of wars and find the courage to know how to end them,” Cedar said after thanking the panel of judges.
