Jesus’ Burial Site?

February 24, 2007 - 10:00 AM by

Documentary filmmakers are saying Jesus’ final resting spot has been discovered in Jerusalem; if it’s true, it’s gonna set the religious and archeological worlds ‘a spinnin’.

According to this story, Oscar winning director James Cameron along with Emmy winning filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici will hold a press conference in New York on Monday explaining their theory and the premise for the film.

The story starts in 1980 in Jerusalem’s Talpiyot neighborhood, with the discovery of a 2,000 year old cave containing ten coffins. Six of the ten coffins were carved with inscriptions reading the names: Jesua son of Joseph, Mary, Mary, Matthew, Jofa (Joseph, identified as Jesus’ brother), Judah son of Jesua (Jesus’ son – the filmmakers claim).

The film took three years to complete and is slated (when, the article doesn’t say) to air on The Discovery Channel, England’s Channel 4 and Israel’s Channel 8. Wah Wah Wee Wah

  2. Interesting. I am not too sure how credible this claim is going to be, as historical (and biblical) writings seem to record Jesus being wrapped in linen or some cloth and placed in a cave, not a coffin.

Although the “30 years later” piece is also interesting (why did they wait that long? That sounds awfully strange if you ask me).

Either way it looks like an interesting story, although I hope Israel presents this case rather openly (with people on both sides of aisle) as the last thing they need is anti-Semites using this to try and drive a wedge between Israel and Christian Zionists (as anti-Semitism is rising pretty fast here, especially in liberal circles).

  4. Wow, that was some sloppy reporting from Ynet.

Just checked out two other Jewish News sites who seem to be casting doubt on this claim.

I never thought I’d see the day when Ynet became sloppy in their reporting. If this trend continues (as they’ve posted other stories) then I may have to list them with Al Jezeera and CBS (Dan Rather) as “D grade journalism” (at its best).

  6. This could be a hoax like the one about the discovery of James, Christ’s brother’s oshuary box. Also, if Jesus were still buried, don’t you think the Jews would have pointed that out to people during the first century of Christianity to discredit believers? Also, there are reports that Jesus was seen by over 500 people during the 40 days after he rose from the dead before his ascension into Heaven. If he were still in the grave, who were the disciples watching rise out of their sight? Remember, James Cameron believed he could explain the flood away by saying it was only the flooding of the Black Sea. Yet he couldn’t explain why so many people claimed to see what could be the ark hundreds of miles to the east and over two miles above sea level.
