Controversy Brewing
Israel and controversy you say? I’m stunned!
I won’t get into detail on the scandal currently brewing over Tourism Minister designate/MK Esterina Tartman and how she blatantly lied to press with claims of academic degrees – including a fictitious advanced degree in Business Admin. – or that she made “harsh” public statements about Arabs.

Read Life in Israel’s version here or a press story here.
What I find interesting is the fact that there will be no parliamentary recrimination and my guess is that she probably won’t step down in her bid for the ministry position. No shame I tell you. No shame.

Whilst scrolling through a local e-mail list, I came across this ad:
FORSALE: Pesach plagues kit
- Throw some frogs!!
- Create a hail storm!!
- Experience darkness!!
- Entertaining, fun, and educational for the whole family.
LIVE THE PLAGUES
Let this Pesach Seder be a true Seder to be remembered!!
I am selling a Pesach kit this year…Limited Supply Available!
Etcetera etcetera. Turns out the kit has plush (i.e. stuffed animal) frogs, hail balls, locusts, lice, etc.
First of all, I don’t know about the rest of ya’ll, but I grew up with the standard stick your pinky finger into red wine and splatter on a salad plate for the plagues. We didn’t get fancy. I almost wish this kit had a scientific component to it i.e. make hail out of dry ice or grow your own lice farm by collecting samples at the local kindergarten.
Second: Hang on a sec! I’m still putting together a Purim costume for this weekend. Can we get through this holiday first then go on to the next one? Sheesh.

Female Soldiers
Rachel Papo is U.S. born, Israel raised and a current U.S. dweller whose photographic works are showing in Los Angeles and being compiled into a book.
The images below are part of a project she worked on for two years and recently exhibited, Serial No. 3817131, named for her army i.d when she served as an Air Force photographer.
I decided to portray female soldiers in Israel during their mandatory military service as a way for me to revisit my own experience…It was a period marked by continuous depression and extreme loneliness, and at the time I was too young to understand these emotions. Through a series of images showing female soldiers in army bases and outside, individually or in groups, I attempt to reveal a facet of this experience that is generally overlooked by the global community.

Good luck, Rachel. And thanks Simply Jews for the heads up.

Give & Ye Shall Receive
World-class violinist Hagai Shaham has performed solo with the English Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre Symphonique Francais, SWF Baden-Baden Symphony Orchestra and he was invited to play Carnegie Hall with Isaac Stern and Pinchas Zukerman.

He chooses to make his mark back home in Israel, though, by giving back. A story in today’s (Hebrew) Maariv says Shaham is very involved in bringing quality music instruction to children living in Israel’s “periphery areas”.
The initiative probably stems from Shaham’s childhood experience of traveling 3 hours to and from his periphery neighborhood to violin lessons.
Whatever the reason, goodonya.
Scary
This Bloomberg story talks about 45 Gaza Internet cafes that have been bombed out over the past few months by The Swords of Islamic Righteousness – a group attempting to erradicate potential porn surfing.
`This just shows how confused these fanatics are.. said Alaa Al-Shawa, 27, a cafe owner. ‘Even they use the Internet to circulate their statements, but they think everyone else uses it for porno.”
A leaflet distributed by the group said it attacked Internet cafes `which are trying to make a whole generation preoccupied with matters other than jihad and worship.’
Damn. Damn.
