Photojournalist Spencer Platt was awarded top honors – World Press Photo of the Year – for this image taken in Beirut during last summer’s war.

Lisa at On the Face cites brewing controversy within Lebanese society over the message the image conveys. Lisa also asks readers what they think.
Here’s what I think: When I first saw this image and noted the fact that it scored image of the year, I was surprised. Yes, it’s good and yes it captures an important essence of “conflict” on numerous levels. But I was very surprised that it garnered the #1 slot.
