Induction Day
It happens tomorrow – when this smiling Israeli teen exchanges her party dress for green khaki.
There’s too many emotions to count or untangle when your first child goes into the army here in Israel. But a couple stand out – like pride (in her), astonishment ( that I have a daughter who’s so old). But surprisingly, no fear, as I know she’ll be in good hands, and won’t be going to any front lines (since the whole country is a front line anyway, whether you’re a soldier or not.)
I promised her I wouldn’t cry when we take her to the bus waiting for her in the morning at a predetermined Jerusalem location, where she’ll join dozens of other 18-year-old female recruits about to devote the next two years of their lives to their country.
But it’s a promise I may not be able to keep.
