Visiting Day
Here’s one of the Israeli Army’s newest recruits … ain’t she sweet?

Visiting day at an army base is like a football tailgate party – without the alcohol. The families drive from all around the country to this gravelly, neglected parking lot full of weeds – and one little picnic bench.
We loaded up with a picnic of some of her favorite homemade treats – and thought that a few other families would have the same idea. Well, EVERY family had not only the same idea, they brought their entire kitchen with them – as well as lounge chairs, ghetto blasters, and care packages containing everything from sheets and towels to suntan lotion, junk food and most importantly, extra rolls of toilet paper.
Of course, with only one picnic bench, everyone centered around their cars – sitting either inside with the AC on (on an unseasonable summer day) or with the back open and food spread out all around.
Our little soldier is doing fine – learning how the army operates, and planning for her first break at home next weekend. Her major accomplishment so far? Folding the blanket on her bed correctly and getting complimented by her commander.
She’ll go far..
Next entry – Adina gets her gun.

Now I finally see why I am glad that I won’t be a hayal boded, and my family will make Aliyah before I am in tironut.
I was a hayelet bodedah and I remember the Tironut Family visit.
I was resigned to the fact that my parents weren’t there and my kibbutz friends hadn’t been able to get a car so I managed to keep a happy face.
But when some of the my fellow soldiers and their kind families invited asked me to join them I burst into tears.
