Smoke Out

North Americans traveling to these parts often notice and comment on the culture of cigarette smoking. Smoking in public places – restaurants, cafes, hotels, etc. – is a pretty acceptable practice. It doesn’t yet have the closet stigma it does in, say, California.
That might be because 23.5% of Israelis smoke. Of those, 5% smoke 2 packs a day. And most heavy smokers are in denial about how much of their money goes towards the habit.
The figures come from a poll conducted by Israel’s Abrahamson Center for Addiction and Smoking Cessation. Perhaps the most interesting finding was that smokers who spent an average of $200 per month on cigarettes guestimated they spent $100 or less.
Also, while education levels mirror smoking habits – the higher the academic standing the lower the smoking rate – income didn’t. Higher earnings didn’t coincide with lowered smoking rates.
Give it up, give it up.

We are part of Europe and the Middle East. What can we expect?
Regardless…very unhealthy little habit.
