Passover Prep Reality
I think those rabbinical articles about how dirt isn’t chametz (not-kosher for Passover…slf), and how you can prepare your house for Pesach in just a few hours so you should really be spending the weeks before on outings with your children, miss the reality of most households
..writes A Mother in Israel – an observant, U.S. transplant to Israel who decided to vent in this posting about prepping for the holiday.

the difficulty of Pesach doesn’t lie in scrubbing the stove or cleaning the refrigerator (usually the two hardest jobs). What makes Pesach so crazy is that you are planning for the most important and elaborate meal of the year (even if your seder meal consists of two dishes, soup and meat/vegetables as mine does) while making your house kosher for Pesach. You don’t just do your regular grocery shopping; you need to fight the crowds and shlep home to buy enough to restock your entire kitchen
For those of us (ahem) who don’t do the thorough type of cleaning and prepping Mom in Israel describes, this is eye opening material. AND she has guests stay over at the house during the holiday. Mmm, Mmm.

It’s true. The daunting task isn’t in the cleaning, but in the fact that you have to have the kitchen cleaned and “turned over” to Pesach dishes and Pesach ingredients on time to cook for the holiday, while at the same time (especially for people with kids) managing the fact that we still are eating hametz (leaved foods) during those same few days before the holiday. Ah, the memories of bringing my sandwiches and bowls of cereal outside to eat in the backyard, lest the crumbs get into areas that have already been made kosher for Passover! Of course, the stress is all the fun, right? :-)
