Kosher Police

Segregation is NOT a thing of the past and in some cases it makes life easier. Like when it comes to Israel’s religious versus secular populations.

Let’s say a very religious man reports a crime – he was physically assaulted while walking home. The police officer who shows up at the door is female. No biggie usually but this is Israel and the man is religious. He will decidely not like the idea of a female inspecting his person for physical evidence of assault.

Enter the solution: A police station for the ultra-Orthodox. Or … Kosher Police.

According to the Hebrew daily Ma’ariv, the ultra-orthodox community in the port city of Ashdod has grown to the country’s 3rd largest, thereby necessitating a “kosher police station”.

In the past orthodox communities have sometimes concealed matters that should have been handled by police out of fear of intimidation, mis-judgement, community pressure, etc. The Ashdod station is being planned in conjunction with a team of rabbis as a means of (hopefully) assuaging fears.

There will be no female officers at the station and only police officers familiar with the ultra Orthodox world will man the unit.

  2. No female officers? How does that even make sense? What if a very religious woman gets assaulted?

  6. Sheesh, what’s next? Should skin color be a factor?

I guess there are some parts of Israel I won’t be visiting this year.
