Let’s Build a Nuclear Reactor

This next one is so out there that it’s almost kind of funny in a not-so-funny way.

Iran (the country) published an ad in The International Herald Tribune (the newspaper) calling for public bids to build 2 nuclear reactors.

Now I haven’t seen the specific ad – I got the tip from friend Karin who tipped off Illuminea blog – but if it’s the real deal, then smack me down with a two X four.

Here’s an excerpt from the Illuminea posting citing the ad:

The nuclear power production and development company of Iran (NPPD), an affiliate company of the atomic energy corporation of Iran (the owner) invites field bids from contractors, companies for the design, supply of equipment, construction and commissioning, of two large scale units 1000-1600 MWe each with 3rd generation nuclear power pressurized light water reactor in the Bushehr province of Iran. Qualified bidders who have sufficient experiences in the construction and commissioning of such plants are requested to obtain the respective bid inquiry specification (BIS) documents upon payment of a non-refundable fee of 15,000 euros transferred to the following account.

Aside from Iran’s obvious calling for aid in putting together their nuclear annihilation energy program, Illuminea takes issue with The Trib for allowing the ad in the 1st place.

I’m questioning the validity of the story. I’d like to see the original ad and I’d want to speak with a few nuclear physicists for their take before getting overly excited.

Well it’s about Time! Sesame Street, sayeth Haaretz, will be coming back to Israel and the Palestinian territories after a looooooooong off-air hiatus caused by lack of $$.

Sesame Street Workshop prez Gary Knell was in Israel and the West Bank last week to effort renewing the series in these parts. Of course, being that we are where we are, peace and tolerance are messages producers bring into the mix.

In Israel and Palestinian areas characters are modified to fit local perceptions so Oscar the Grouch is dubbed “Moishe Oofnik” and the Muppet character learning to read is, in the West Bank, “Haneen”.

Enjoy the clip from an old Israel episode…

Why not poke fun at the two men up on the chopping block this fine Spring day?

Israellycool’s Aussie Dave clipped together a humorous pictorial of Prime Minister Olmert and Defense Minister Peretz’s “on-off again relationship”.

It makes for light fun. Something we could all use now and again.

Voice of Peace

During my first years in Israel, I tuned in constantly to The Voice of Peace (VOP), an English language pirate radio station broadcast “From Somewhere in the Mediterranean” i.e. off the coast of Tel Aviv.

Radio station founder-manager-owner, peace activist and philanthropist Abie Nathan was an icon because of his outspoken political activism and for his constant & tireless peace advocacy.

My VOP memories include John Lennon’s “Give Peace A Chance“, Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” and oldies played as the sun set during Twilight Time.

The ship went bottoms up in 1993 (check out who wrote the article in the link); Yesterday Nathan turned 80.

Imshin and One Jerusalem write evocatively of Abie and VOP memories and wish him a Happy Birthday. A snippet from Imshin:

I grew up on a steady diet of the ‘Voice of Peace’. Their music was not really my cup of tea, neither were Abie’s politics, but his radio station was fresh and unique, and had English DJ’s which sounded like home to me. The ‘Voice of Peace’ was a very real presence in my life at an age when music was seriously important.

We’re sorry you’re not feeling so great Abie. This clip’s for you.

..well sorta. Today the state appointed Winograd Commission issues an interim report on last summer’s Lebanon War. What does that mean?

Criticism and finger pointing in the general direction of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Amir Peretz and former chief of staff Dan Halutz on what did & didn’t go down strategically, politically and militarily last summer. Possible recommendations for resignations.

We tend to refrain from things political here at Israelity. That doesn’t mean we don’t have opinions, maintain watchful eyes on unfolding issues or place hard earned cash on who’s going to fall hardest.

But rather than pick apart the report, decipher and argue its points and loudly vocalize pro or anti therein, we’d like to direct you to more suitable venues for that sorta thing. For the political breakdown or general goods, try these guys:

- Haaretz poll. Haaretz is asking readers to “Make Your Point” by voting for whether or not Olmert and/or Peretz should resign. Get in there and vote and comment to your heart’s desire.
- Ynet is good for up-to-the-minute news and fill ins
- The Muqata can be relied upon for a summary and commentary
- Check Jewlicious for commentary or humorous observation
- Israel Insider will give you the brief brief
- Oleh Girl will lend a professor/not-so-new immigrant’s personal perspective
- And there are the standard news outlets – Reuters, the BBC, the NY Times, etc. – for reports and possible commentary.

The web abounds with opinion and alternative and cutting edge commentary. Get out there and surf ….
