New on the scientific frontier: Spiders are a farmer’s friend. In fact, the right kind of spider can save agriculturists a hefty chunk of change when combatting insects that attack crops.

Ben Gurion University researchers found that specific types of field spiders are highly effective in warding off insects and aphids that tend to destroy wheat fields and other crops.

Scientists unleashed spiders in southern Israel fields and discovered they’re not only more cost efficient and effective than insecticides in warding off pesky pests, they’re also less harmful to the environment. (ya think?)
