It’s Strictly Business
Ahhhh the trials and tribulations of living in small-town Israel—where everyday there’s a complication in the system. As a new writer for Israel21c, I was asked to cover the upcoming Israel Festival bringing international acts to Israel next month. I contacted the PR person in charge, who was happily willing to send me a DVD of the program. But wait, the Israeli post office might be on strike AGAIN. So what else is new? Concerned that I get it in time, she asked if I would be in Tel Aviv that day, which I found very strange. Why not UPS, Fed-Ex—its so common to do so in America. Deciding against it, she continued, “Do you have a friend in Tel Aviv who would be willing to pick it up and deliver it to you in Israel this weekend?” Westernized American culture has taught me to expect the most impersonal means possible in obtaining even the simplest of items. I guess this country is just too laid-back for mail delivery services. How utterly Israeli!
