I don’t mean to take away from the solemnity of Yom HaShoah – Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day. But this slice of life illustrates that even on a day that we commemorate the fallen, there are those in this country that rose amid the backdrop of this atrocity who are thinking about… dating.
I just gotten into a cab driven by a young, earring-wearing head-shaven driver, with a perpetual smile on his face – one of those guys who always looks like he’s in a good mood. After a bit of jovial small talk, his car phone rings, and he answers on the speaker phone.

“Hey, motek, what are you doing right now? Are you alone?” asked the male caller.
Winking at me, the driver responded, “yup, all alone. I’m driving towards town.”
“Great, you gotta come here right now. I have one for you. She’s just your style, and she’s available. She’s under the dryer now”
‘First of all, how do you know she’s available, and second, how long is she going to be there?” he nonchalantly said, slapping my thigh as if to share an inside joke, even as he started to drive a little faster.
“I talked to her, you idiot. But hurry, her hair is almost done. Just come in, like you’re dropping by, and I’ll make some coffee and invite her,” responded his friend, evidently by the conversation a hair stylist
“Ok, ok, I’ll come by. But you might have to stall her for a couple minutes,” he said as we ran into some traffic.
“Just get here, women like this don’t come around too often.”
They hung up, and the driver started laughing. “A good friend I have here, no? He does this all the time. Usually it doesn’t amount to anything, but, you never know.”
Dropping me off, I wished him luck as he checked himself out in the rear view mirror and ran a hand over his head stubble. Then he gave it some gas.

That’s like straight out of a Martin Scorcese film …
