Tel Aviv Fame Walk?
L.A. has the Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard embedded with names of celebrities – over 2,000 of them.
Tel Aviv might get its own comparable Walk too. The city’s municipality powers that be are scratching their collective heads over the idea of a Tel Aviv/Ibn Gvirol Street Walk of Fame to mark the city’s 100th birthday in 2009. Embedded sidewalk stars would include names of Jewish celebrities from both inside and outside of the country.
“As the culture capital of the State of Israel, Tel Aviv deserves to have its own stars,” the man behind the idea, Peer Weisner, told Israel’s Hebrew daily Maariv.
If implemented, Ibn Gvirol Street – chosen for its central location and proximity to theaters, the opera house, main library and the city’s main art museum – will be studded with copper molds bearing names of Jewish icons including:
Woody Allen, Barbara Streisand, Steven Spielberg, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jeff Goldblum, Michael Douglas, Goldie Hawn, Sasha Baron-Cohen, Scarlett Johansson, Bette Midler, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Jerry Seinfeld, Sean Penn and Billy Crystal.
Of course, Israeli artists will also have their stars.
Sean Penn??? Sean Penn???

Is it me, or does it seem a little offensive that they want a walk of stars, with only Jewish artists or icons? I don’t know if that was the original intent, or the interpretation of the writer here, but do we always have to forget that one fifth of the country isn’t Jewish, and might also have some people who have contributed positively and could be remembered for it? It just seems like it might be a nice nation building type exercise to recall and remember both Jewish and Israeli Arab artists/stars/icons etc.
Katherine: The story is from the Hebrew press, the idea comes from Tel Aviv’s municipality and I’m the “messenger” i.e. translating the text from Hebrew. Perhaps a letter or e-mail to the “powers that be” stating your concerns is in order..?
That’s a good idea. Will I get off my ass and do it though? :)
although I would also like to know if it is just me who is super sensitive (being not-Jewish in this country makes you that way, for the most part), or is it offensive? anybody?
Sean Penn??
it did strike me as a bti wierd that the criteria are what they are
I am not Jewish , but my heart is Jewish ( what can I do) , to make a ” walk of fame”
in Tel-Aviv is not an original idea, when you go to Key West Florida , there is a park with little statues of famous people, you can sit there and enjoy the silence and rest!
Any way …congratulations…….Tel-Aviv!!
