Got Milk?

A strange virus is making the rounds within Israel’s bovine population: Not yet identified and mysterious in nature, it causes dysentery in cows and results in dramatic drops in milk production.

Dramatic meaning zero. No milk.

The virus has hit several milk-producing collective farms (moshavim/kibbutzim) around the country and vets and farmers are stumped. They’ve run tests and consulted with foreign veterinary experts. No dice on shedding light.

The Agriculture Ministry, however, reports that after a similar bout in the north, cows “snapped out of it” and returned to normal milk producing levels. The ministry suspicion is an allergy to a particular cattle fly is involved.

The good news: When the milk flows again, it’s safe to drink. Sure. (Where’s my royal taster when I need him?)
