Via Mideast Piece we get this newsflash:

A Jihad for Love”, the world’s first documentary film on the role of homosexuality in Islam, has hit the U.S. film circuit.

Directed by Parvez Sharma, the movie was filmed in a dozen countries in nine different languages. “Jihad” was produced by Sandy (Simcha) DuBowski of Trembling Before G-d, the documentary that broke new ground on issues of homosexuality within the Jewish ultra-orthodox community.

In “A Jihad for Love”…
Sharma has attempted to portray homosexuality without shame all the while protecting the safety of his sources by filming them as silhouettes or with their faces covered. In one case, he said the family of an Afghan woman he interviewed “would undoubtedly kill her” if they found out she was a lesbian. Even one of the film’s associate producers, an Egyptian gay man, chose not to be listed in the credits for fear of possible consequences.

Hitting the Water

Remember the scene in Finding Nemo when Nemo’s dad is frustrated, angry and tired and Dori happily advises: Just keep Swimming, Just Keep Swimming, Just keep Swimming, Swimming, Swimming…?

That scene came to mind when reading Israeli Mom’s most recent blog entry. “Mom” is learning to swim and she blogs her fear and struggle.

My good friend Steve told me that the most important thing in swimming is not to panic. Well, I’m sorry, but when I can’t breathe, I tend to panic, I guess. I’m not even sure if it’s panic per se. I’m too busy thinking about oxygen to define my exact state of mind at that exact moment.

Girl (woman), don’t give up. It’s a very important skill to acquire and you’re brave for taking it on at a “later stage” in life…Just do like Dori sez and keep on keepin’ on.

Strike with Force

YNet is running a story on a former Palestinian informer who advises Israel to pound Gaza relentlessly if they want rocket hits to stop.

Suliman Qadia,a former Gaza refugee camp resident, now lives in Sderot because after years of giving Israel’s Shin Bet insider information on goings-on in Gaza, he fled for his own safety. That sort of arrangement – the information giving part – goes on all the time and according to the article he’s not the only Palestinian transplant to Sderot of his ilk.

What surprises me is: 1) he allows his name & photo to be circulated with the story 2) he admits that going public with his story may jeopardize family members still living in Gaza 3) he/his family weren’t guaranteed safety in return for information sharing.

But those questions border on political and who knows what type deal he had?

Read the article here. Observations aside, Qadia advocates:

“It’s only getting worse and with no end in sight, unfortunately I see no real leadership here, it’s every man for himself. Nothing else will work, we just need to go into Gaza, full force, and pound them, erase them completely, until it’s over. That’s the only language they understand and believe me – I know what I’m talking about. After all, I lived with them.”

The Sinai Conundrum

Lirun is a lawyer who lives in Jaffa.

He recently blogged about his dilemma: he wanted to travel to the Sinai Desert but hesitated because Israelis have been hearing about the dangers of traveling in the Sinai for several years now…Al Qaeda operatives training in the desert, Al Qaeda operatives incahoots with Egyptian or Sudanese locals, random bombings, planned kidnappings…an assortment of lovely worries one doesn’t generally want to take along on holiday.

He finally packed it in and went anyway…And had a restful, enjoyable time.

this trip was amazing for so many reasons that i could not possibly list here.. but what struck me the most was how safe i felt (at least for most of the time) and how much the terror drivers of my region had invested in the fear trade..

I don’t think it is quite that simple but I’m with Lirun on the affinity for the place…It also doesn’t hurt that diving is gorgeous off the strip.
