Car Talk

Ra’anana Ramblings muses over the phenomenon of complete strangers randomly approaching to ask: How much do you want for your car?

Yesterday, a hand-written offer to buy was left on my windshield as my car sat in a public parking lot.

You probably assume that I drive a gorgeous automobile. Right? Wrong. It’s a 1994 Honda Civic- and believe me, it looks its age. Plenty of dings and scratches, nothing to write home about. It’s our aliyah car (the car I bought at the much cheaper price given to new immigrants). I really can’t see why anyone would want it-I assume that these people are driving cars in much worse condition, and my Honda would be a trade up.

Gee, I wonder if anyone will leave a note on my bicycle?

Heels on the Tracks

Sitting on a playground park bench with a group of friends yesterday, one grumbled loudly.

I am sick of it
she complained. The government, the corruption..I’ve had enough.

Oh, you mean the Winograd Report?

Ach, no. (dismissive wave of hand) Enough of Winograd already. The train company.

Huh?

The train was an hour late this morning. When it finally pulled up we boarded and got going but slowed to a halt within a few minutes. They announced over the P.A. that there was a mechanical failure.

So we sat inside the train like a bunch of prisoners of war for half an hour waiting for it to be fixed. Then they tell us they can’t get the train going again. And we’ll have to walk back along the tracks.

There I am in my heels carrying a laptop hobbling along the gravel between the tracks with hundreds of other people. By the time I got home there was no way I was going to work. And then what do I hear on the radio? That the train workers went on strike! There was nothing mechanically wrong; they simply decided to strike and WE paid the price. I’ve had enough.

1) I could sorta see that kind of thing also happening in France or in …France
2) I was laughing too hard to be compassionate
3) She’s right. That move was decidedly uncool
