Vision Courtesy of Saudi Arabia
Smadar Vahavi was going blind. But last week her vision was restored by Dr. Mohammed Anwar of Saudi Arabia, a cornea transplant specialist who came to Israel against bureaucratic and political odds to perform the surgery.
Anwar, renowned for his innovative method of transplanting corneas, performed a closed circuit televised procedure so that dozens of Israeli physicians could watch and adopt his technique. Anwar globe hops on a regular basis performing surgeries on patients desperately in need of his expertise.
In Saudi Arabia, colleagues puzzled over the doctor’s determination to help Israeli physicians and Israel in general.
“This is a great country with good people,” Anwar said of his three days in Israel. “I’m not interested in politics. I came here for humanitarian reasons – to save Smadar’s eyesight and teach the other doctors what I do.”

That is great news to hear!
Is this the first time that Saudi Arabia’s medical community has shown interest in working with Israel?
