Salmonella?

Before you go putting that fresh basil into your bolognese sauce, you might want to check its origins.

Israel’s Health and Agriculture Ministries are testing basil grown in Israel’s north for Salmonella – YIKES! – after a number of Europeans were stricken with intestinal problems believed to be caused by basil exported from Israel.

The rare strain of salmonella detected in England, Scotland, Denmark and Holland is being compared by Israeli health experts to a strain found recently in 20 Israelis. Symptoms among those affected include vomiting, diarrhea and high fever.

British health experts believe the bacterial origin is carried in fecal matter of birds that contaminate the basil fields.

Dr. Alex Leventhal, Israel’s Head of Public Health Matters within the Health Ministry advises: “There isn’t an advisory against eating basil. We’re investigating the matter.”

Mmm….Yummy
