The Non-Kosher Meat Uproar
There have been loads of blog entries and press reports about billionaire Arcady Gaydamak’s controlling interest buyout of Israel’s Tiv Taam supermarket chain.

According to this report, Gaydamak plans to keep non-kosher meat out of the chain and shut it down on Saturdays. He says that pork is not in keeping with Jewish tradition. And that’s why computer keyboards are buzzing.
Here’s what I say: Okay so Arcady’s trying to appease the religious parties because he recently formed his own political party and is supposedly thinking of running for mayor of Jerusalem.
Clearly the pork-buying public trolling Tiv Taam aisles on Saturdays isn’t who he’s looking to charm. As noted on Independence Day, Arcady’s more the mass population grill-out-give everyone a free ice cream in the park type. So there’s the motive.
As for shopping for a side of bacon on Shabbat: There ARE other places. And this move opens the marketplace for budding ventures. I promise, it’s not that big of a deal. We’re not another Iran.
Problematic? Corrupt? A tad Militaristic? Check. Iran? Not so fast.
