If a proposed new law makes it through Israel’s parliament, animal tested cosmetics and cleaning products won’t be allowed into the country anymore. Israel’s Education Committee gave the law a 1st stage “green light” yesterday.

If the law passes, Israel will be following European Parliament lead after the body passed a 2004 law banning import and export of animal tested cosmetics.

According to Hebrew press, each time a cosmetic product is approved for market, 2-3,000 animals are used to test that product. The animals often die during painful and harsh testing processes.

“These aren’t life saving products,” MK Michael Melchior told press. “And the Jewish code of ethics, similar to any basic societal code of ethics anywhere, opposes experimenting on animals – particularly for something like cosmetics or cleaning products that aren’t medical necessities…”
