Here Goes…

Get ready for some rough & tumble: Police have granted approval for next week’s Gay Pride Parade in Jerusalem – a surefire recipe for tension between the gay community and the city’s ultra-Orthodox population.

For now, the “march” and after party are set for June 21 with an estimated police force of 7,000 (!) to be implemented for safeguarding. But Jerusalem’s chief of police is warning: if the situation gets too heated, we’re calling it off.

The city’s ultra-Orthodox contingency immediately responded to the decision with a demonstration last night.

Gay rights leader Noa Satat said “the parade will be an expression of freedom of speech and civil rights, and will bear a restrained and moderate Jerusalem character” as opposed to Tel Aviv’s more flamboyant parade.

Good idea.
