Drugs & Paradise
Over the past few months, there has been a spate of young peoples’ deaths in Israel related to lethal drug and alcohol binges.
As a counter measure, the country’s Anti-Drug Organization is airing a new, fairly controversial campaign. News of the campaign is making its way around the blogosphere and Internet news site realms because it’s based on the suicide bomber custom of taping a farewell message.
The ad translates as:
“My name is Omer Kendel, I’m 16 and from Ra’anana, I am saying goodbye to my parents Vered and Shmuel and my sister Karen as I head out to a party in Tel Aviv. There’s only one way to be truly free: Get drunk, take drugs & get wasted. Don’t cry, mom, I’m going to paradise/heaven.” The slate reads: Drugs and Alcohol = Suicide
Take a look
Some channels won’t air the ad. It packs a powerful punch and I’m really not sure what I think of it. Controversial vis a vis suicide bombing victims and their families on the one hand but it packs a powerful message on the other. Will it achieve the desired results?
