Easing the Parking Nightmare

If you live in an urban center AND own a car, you know what it’s like to come home at night and circle. And circle. And circle. For 15 minutes, half an hour, longer. My all time record? An hour. At 1 a.m. In San Francisco. Followed closely by 45 minutes at 4 a.m. in Tel Aviv.

Thanks to a precedent ruling, parking woes should ease for Tel Aviv residents – albeit slightly – in the future.

Tel Aviv District Court Judge David Rosen ruled yesterday that parking in a bus stop after hours is okay. Rosen was presiding over a case involving a car owner who had parked his car at a bus stop ten minutes before midnight. The car was towed and the driver fined.

The driver decided to contest the fine maintaining that bus service stops at 11:10 p.m. I.e. why should he not park there if the stop isn’t in use?

The judge said that although the law prevents people from parking in bus stops – full stop – logic dictates that the city’s parking squeeze should allow drivers to park in stops after bus route hours. Rosen ruled in favor of the driver.
