No Pain

This next bit renders the expression “No Pain, No Gain” somewhat ridiculous.

According to stats, there are a few hundred people in the world living with C.I.P.A. or Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis – an inability to feel pain. It’s caused by a genetic mutation that damages neurotransmitters.

According to Hebrew press, 45 of the world’s patients are in Israel’s Bedouin community – a fairly high rate because “The syndrome is generally fostered by family inter-marriage”, says Professor Yaakov Levy of Beer Sheba’s University Medical Center.

Sounds like it would be a great? Think again.

Feeling no pain can mean continuing to walk on a broken leg, repeatedly biting a mangled tongue or non-detection of a serious burn resulting in festering infection.

Professor Levy and colleagues have located the mutation within patients’ DNA strands and are attempting to locate the donor genes responsible for onpassing the trait.

Good luck.
