This posting comes from our neighbors Mark & Nat over in Kuwait at TWOFORTYEIGHTAM.

According to the post, a new trend in their part of the world is putting cans into one’s hijab for that ultra-sexy, conehead look.

Huh? Whatever floats your boat, ladies…

Nostalgia Sunday

Let’s give tomorrow’s Sharm Summit a good luck jinx. What say you, Boaz & Mati?

Animal Isolation

Okay. Call me whatever you like but when I read a story saying that Yossi the Elephant – the same one that attacked and killed another elephant in Tel Aviv’s Safari Park months ago – has been condemned to a life of isolation for his crime, I shake my head in bewilderment.

First of all, admittedly, Yossi also went after another elephant again last week. So Safari staff felt they couldn’t take a chance with him hurting any more of his colleagues and are protecting the interests of the greater good.

But this is an elephant sans natural habitat and placed in an artificial setting. My guess is he doesn’t want to share space with the other animals. Or that something is ailing him. Was he nuts before the recent incidents?

If so, maybe back in the African bush he was the “freak elephant” – prone to bouts of hysteria and drama – and all the other elephants knew to stay away from. “Oh there goes Fuseeka (because there are no Yossi’s in Africa). He’s doing that stir-crazy thing again. Let’s go hang out and snort some water or something. We’ll give him some space…”

Except where do you go to get space when you’re sharing close quarters?

I’m giving the veterinary community the benefit of the doubt because I read that when Yossi first went postal, vets here consulted with worldwide experts regarding his bizarre & aggressive behavior. So the docs probably got some sound advice.

But based upon the National Geographic films I’ve seen and the teeny bit I read just now after googling “Elephants”, these are herd or pack mammals. Males tend toward aloneness with age but they maintain occasional contact with the pack. Call it a comfort thing.

Isolated for life? They can live to be 70! Yossi’s a mere 33. Isn’t there an alternative?

Or am I anthropomorphisng in an extreme way?

This is CNN’s report on the Maxim/Israeli women as sex symbols/changing the Israeli image controversy. Gee, I’m torn about this one because it does seem to pander to a very common denominator. But it’s working, isn’t it?
