Things Culinary

My brother, a professional chef in the U.S., asked me to pick him up a cookbook from Israel. Something he could use to spice up his current menu with a little sumpin sumpin from the Middle East. It would have to be in English and standard falafel and shwarma wouldn’t work for him – his is an upscale restaurant and the clientele is discerning.

So I went out cookbook shopping in Tel Aviv and came across a few choices. But none was as impressive as this newly released book.

The Book of New Israeli Food is, first and foremost, pretty. The book is a “looker”…also, the recipes are sophisticated – artichoke stuffed with papaya and seared tuna – the background information on ingredient origins is valuable and the local scene Israel images are beautiful.

As a gift, it’s heavy – literally and pricewise (NIS 179 or about $45 U.S.) – but worth it even for the non-kitchenite foodies who might want to display it on the coffee table as a centerpiece.

Compiled by leading Israeli food editor Jana Gur and travel photographer Eilon Paz, it’s worth a look-see.

  2. I also saw it and thought it was great. FYI, if you order it through http://www.ibooks.com it is cheaper.
