$$ Matters

Gilly of If I forget Thee is an Israeli transplant to Silver Springs, Maryland. He recently blogged about what he found to be the absurdity of getting a first time credit card in the United States.

“No we can’t give you a card (despite the fact that now Mrs G also has a healthy salary going into the account)

What you can do however is to put $4000 into a CD (a pikadon) for 12 months.

Against that collateral, we will lend you $4000.

You can then repay the $4000 on a monthly basis.

After 12 months of seeing that you pay this money back, we’ll consider giving you a credit card.”

In order to get a credit card, I need to take a loan?! :P

I looked at her like she was on crack. She apologised, saying that she also considered it absurd. I thanked her and left.

Funny, to me that makes perfect sense. The Israeli banking system, on the other hand….

  4. Eh, it’s a matter of perspective. The Israeli banking system has the same thing to get a credit (not debit, which most people have) card.

  6. Avi: Yes, it\’s all about perspective. But still, about Israeli banking …a system that involves THREE HOURS to open a checking account…? Need I say more?

A: Yes, \”A\”, many of the posts are \”rehashes\” of other posts intended for people who don\’t read through blogs but are interested in what others are \”talking about\”. They\’re also recaps of Hebrew press for those who don\’t read Hebrew
