If it’s not in the British press, then it can’t be real…

Had a telephone conversation with my mum in England yesterday.  She lives in a tiny little fishing village about six hours drive from London. An enclave of artists and painters. She’s pretty well informed about world events, in fact she’s normally right on the ball.

“Oh,” I said to her after the usual gossip and complaints about the weather (her the rain, me the heat). “I am so sick of all this war talk. Will there be one, won’t there be one – that’s all everyone’s talking about. It’s driving me crazy.”

There was a long silence from the other end.  “Which war dear?”

“You know the war between Israel and Syria.”

“There’s going to be a war?”

“Well, I hope not, but that’s what everyone is talking about, though no-one actually seems to want it. And it’s supposed to start in a few weeks.”

Another pause. “But that would be very serious.”

“Well, yes,” I said.

“But it hasn’t been in the papers here. There hasn’t been any mention of it.”

“Well, I don’t know how anyone could miss it. It’s been in the headlines here for months. People were talking about the possibility even last summer. There’s so much speculation going on. I’m fed up with it all.”

“No,” she said firmly after a moment. “There won’t be a war. It would have been in the papers here if there was going to be a war. It’ll be fine. Don’t worry about it.”

  2. Reminds me of certain American Jews and New Yorkers and the New York Times. If it’s not in the NY Times then it doesn’t exist.

  4. But her ma is right. It’s not being talked about on NPR either. And we know THAT means it can’t possibly be true…

  6. Well the optimistic part of me likes to think that it means that we here in Israel are getting our knickers in a twist over nothing.
Like everyone did before the second Gulf war.
Alternatively it could just mean that unless it’s a story knocking Israel it’s just not worth reporting in the UK press!

  10. War with Syria? Damn it! Why doesn’t the Ha’aretz English edition publish these stories? Because we Diasporans don’t need to worry our pretty little heads?
