Beer Sheba Blues
Beer Sheba. Capital of the Negev. Home of Ben Gurion University. Biblically traversed by numerous heroes including Abraham and Jacob. Gateway to the Negev. Israel’s most successful development town.
Things.co.il isn’t buying it.
In a recent (Hebrew) post titled “10 Unconvincing Reasons to Live in Beer Sheba“, things lists:
- Laundry air-dries quickly
- There aren’t a lot of sorry looking street cats (but there are a lot of pooping pigeons)
- The bus only costs 3.5 shekels (less than $1)
- You can take money out of the ATM machine, buy an apartment with it and still have $$ left over for the bus
- The university atmosphere is fantastic (the rumors are true)
- The summer night’s breeze whilst sitting on a porch sipping a beer is pleasant
- People are nice and not stuck up like in the Sharon area
- It’s only five minutes from the Air Force Museum in Hatzerim
- For residents of Dimona, Yeruham, Arad, Netivot and Ofakim, Beer Sheba is “The Big City”
- Lonely Planet Guide Books describe the city as “Best seen through the back window of a bus while driving out of town”
That last one was pretty cold blooded.

The Air Force Museum is awesome.
As I come from Dayton, Ohio, home of the Wright Brothers who started all this flying stuff a little over a century ago and Wright-Patterson AFB where the US Air Force Museum is located at, I am naturally interested in what the Israeli Air Force Museum looks like. Imagine it is quite a place. Can anybody direct me to good informative web site about the IAF Museum? Appreciate it if they would.
i dunno but recommend googling it or first going to the IDF site or to israeli government site. other suggestions?
Thanks Stephanie, will do.
Am making ALIYAH soon. Does Beer Sheeba have a large Reform
population? How are living conditions and expenes?
Need to know.
Thanks,
R.H.
